Expedia offers - Great or Gimmick

Having monitored the price of a trip i have been interested in for a week or so i decided to go ahead and purchase two days ago.
The hotel was a 'smart deal' highlighted at the top of the page, with some sort of deal attached.
Since then i have seen the price go up slightly and last night the exact same itinary was over £1000 more expensive.
Today i have looked and the smart offer has now gone and the hotel is just mingled in the list of other hotels. However the exact same itinary is now cheaper than what i paid.
Not complaining about the cost but how does expedia work. How can the same trip on offer be more expensive than when it is not on offer.
Is the green smart deal advertising just a gimmick advertising tool?

When I want to compare pricing/watching prices, I like to clear my cache before going back on the site, so there is one tip for you OP.Is the green smart deal advertising just a gimmick advertising tool?
Yes it sounds like it and it worked. We all fall for these type of marketing gimmicks, that IS the whole point.......like Supermarkets who sell us BOGOF offers, etc. Maybe I'm missing the whole point of your question?0
