Digital photos appearing as square

I lent my camera to a friend today who wanted to take a couple of photos. I just went to upload them for her and they are square and smaller than usual. I assume in error she pressed some setting I am unfamiliar with? Can anyone tell me what this might be?

    Its probably the aspect ratio/image format. Sounds like its been changed from the default for your camera to 1:1

    Go into the setup/settings menu and revert it.
