Car insurance claim - vandalism

Options
My car was vandalised by a key scratch from one end of the car to the other on the passenger side. I have 3 years no claims but i will lose that as i do not have protection. My renewal is up in a few months and my question is if I add protection on my no claims when renewing will i still be able to make a claim for this incident?

You could, but it would retrospectively affect your NCD and the protection wouldn't apply. The claim may be declined as you didn't notify in time. And/or you would need to declare it anyway when you renew.

Even if you protect your no claims the premium is likely to increase if you claim.

You will still get the same % off your policy but you will be a higher risk.

So instead of getting 50% off your £500 premium before the incident you maybe getting 50% off your £800 premium after the claim.

And you will need to declare the incident for upto 5 years.

If they find out the incident happened before the policy started it could be cancelled for fraud.

    No.

If you claim now you will have 1 year at renewal.

(Your wheeze to claim next policy year with protected NCD is a non starter unless you are prepared to submit a fraudulent claim that the damage has been done since your renewal)

I am thinking about getting quotes from garages instead of making a claim to see if it will work out cheaper. In case that it will be cheaper to claim how long do i have from the incident in which to claim before it becomes invalid?

Check your policy wording on when you should notify them about claims - most insurers use an "ASAP" type condition for when to do this rather than put a finite time.

But you'll be ok for a couple of days whilst you get your quotes
