iphone5 sound problems

Hi Can someone help please. I have spent an hour trawling through technie websites. My iphone5 does not make any sound when I dial a number, I cannot hear the other phone ringing, although it is ringing. Also on the keypad the speakerphone option is greyed out.
I have restored to factory settings as was the advice I found but it has not made any difference. Is it a phone issue or a network one?

Have you checked
Settings > Sounds > Lock Sounds?
That had accidentally been put on on my OH phone. Muted EVERYTHING.We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams.0 -
It was on lock sounds but that has not made a difference to my problem. Thanks anyway.0

I think lock sounds should be off...maybe.
Alternatively, most Apple stores will look at it if it's still a reasonably new phone. Even if you didn't purchase it from.We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams.0 -
Please plug in a pair of headphones fully, then play a song on iTunes. Then unplug the headphones. That should fix it. Alternatively you may have fluff in the headphone jack that needs cleaning out.0

Ok I tried this. The music from itunes is playing out of the phone not through headphones. I have tried cleaning headphone jack but that made no difference. I also tried 2 sets of headphones. Any ideas?0

I have had a similar problem caused by fluff in the headphone port, the Apple Store cleaned it out for free.0

Is it possible to do it yourself? It's a trek to Apple store.0

Unfold a paperclip and get it in the headphone socket.
Don't just stop at the first bit that comes out, have a good root around and you should be able to clean it out fully.
Amazing how much crap accumulates in there over time.0 -

suggest something non metallic , a paper clip might make an electrical mess
do not attempt this is your phone is under warranty of any sorts0 -
also check you havn't inadvertantly put the phone into 'do not disturb mode'.
slide upwards from bottom of the home screen to reveal the shortcuts screen and ensure the moon symbol (4th along the top row) ISN'T lit / selected.0
