Am I being ripped off...

Options
I own my house which is in the middle of a housing association estate and the street are getting new fencing...

I have been told that this will cost approx. £2,000 for my property which seems quite steep. The existing fence is about 2-3 metres long (width of a terraced house) and the other side is about the same. so they are only doing 2 fences...

Earlier, I was quoted £700 to paint the top section (front and back of the house) which I refused to pay and now my house looks like the odd one out...

£2000 for a 3 metre stretch of fence is extortionate! It shouldn't cost more than a couple of hundred ( less if you can do the labour yourself). I would refuse the offer and get it done myself if I were you.

    Thanks for the advice there...

I must apologise, as I forgot to mention that the fence will be made of metal and not wood... it is a wooden fence at the moment...

In a nutshell, the fence will be in the shape of an L and the total distance I would say is about 7 - 10 metres.. The width of the house and the length of the front garden (very small)...

They are also charging me for a gate, but I share my entrance with the next door neighbour (to the right, if looking towards the house)...

I still think it is alot of money...

When you say metal, do you mean wire mesh or solid metal panels (as i haven't seen metal panel fences before)

The type of metal fence you would see surrounding a public park, but not that high, if that helps....

surely that isn't as private as a wooden fence, i expect the metal fence would cost a lot, try contacting an iron monger (fabricator with your measurements(fence that is :) ) and get a quote.

This is for a wooden fence but to give you an idea - we had ours completely redone with concrete posts and wooden runners and pickets - our fence is 127 ft long (40-50m?) and cost us £1350 incl vat earlier this year

I have been told that I do not have to have it done, but when it comes to sell my house, it will not look like the others... will look into getting someone else to do it - the only problem is getting the correct type of fencing...

    Couple of thoughts:

    1. Not looking like all the others may be a good thing? You could go for a really nice wooden fence for that sort of money

    2. Wait til the company that's doing the work turn up, get hold of the boss/foreman and ask for a price for yours to be "while they are there anyway" (tell them you're not too fussed, but might gor for it for a good price)

    3. Wait til it's all done and get quotes off others if you think it loooks good
