New felt roof

I have a garage for which I'm looking to get a new felt roof fitted. It currently has a box section sheet roof, so this needs to be removed prior to felt being applied. There are already boards fitted under the sheet roof, which are in good condition and I'm told can be felted straight onto. The roof is approx 24 square metres.

I have been quoted £1900 + vat for this work, which is for 2 layers of felt. There's a bit of a long story behind this, but this is supposed to be a heavily discounted price so should be really good value for money (full price is apparently £2800.)
I've been doing a bit of googling and everything I find suggests that this is expensive for a full price quote, let alone a discounted one. A lot of sites seem to suggest the cost should be £50 - £60 per square metre, which is a lot less than I've been quoted. Is my quote over priced or have I missed something?
I do live in Aberdeen where there's a higher cost of living, this will make a difference but surely not that much?

Thanks

  • That's far too much, you need to get at least 3 quotes if not 4.
I had a garage demolished and taken away and new floor put down and a new one built for £2,700. Its recieved loads of compliments and I was quoted from this price to £4,300 from different places.
This just shows the difference in prices. I think you will be able to get that done miles cheaper.

    Thanks Dandelion.

I agree with you about getting several quotes and normally would do this. The reason I'm asking the question is that I want to get a quick feel for whether this quote is as high as I think it is.

The company in question have already done some work for me to fix a leak in my garage (I got a few quotes for the original work and they're one seemed reasonable.)
The original work has not solved the problem, so we are now trying to reach an agreement on how to move forwards. I have said I would be willing pay for some extra work to be done to get the leak sorted properly, providing the quote accounts for the fact that the first work was not successful. The company said they would quote for felting the toof and would discount it as much as they can.
I am now trying to establish if the company are being at all reasonable with the new quote. This affects whether I go ahead with this company for the second lot of work (the felting) and also what I do with the bill for the original work.

Any idea what a reasonable price would be for this work?

    Thanks.
  • If I were you I'd register on my builder and post the job up and people will give you quotes. I'd do this and ask about and take your time with it before you decide anything. Best of luck with it all.

I live in Greater London and getting quotes minimum £1400 for 7.5sq metres for flat roof over kitchen extension. I've had 4 quotes and £1400 (no vat) is the cheapest. Seems like another case of consumers being ripped off again and again.
