I can confirm; InterMarche in Calais last week was €1.17 for diesel.

    Thanks for that.
We hope that we will make out trip sometime during the kids summer holiday, so probably the middle ish of August.
Plenty of time for oil prices to go back up :(

I did have a look on google maps and yes, you are right, it is in the middle of nowhere and well off the beaten track. Maybe about 15 mins from the main road?
It still looks a great place though.
Yes it's not far off the motorway maybe 10-15 mins. We found it OK without a satnav. I remember the drive away in the morning to the next junction of the A75 (J30) it looked like we were heading into a farm's courtyard but it wasn't - the road carried on towards the motorway.

Ive been doing some research on different ferry routes.
The Newhaven to Dieppe route seems favourably priced, depending on your time of travel of course.
You can get an overnight return sailing, with an inside cabin for four people, for about £250.00 return in August. A sailing without a cabin is around the £175.00 price point.

It is still much more expensive that the traditional Dover to Calais crossing, but no where near as expensive as the routes to Bilbao and Santander.

The Bilbao/Santander routes don't make much sense for going to the NE med coast anyway as it's a long way, probably over 600km in Spain.

the Newhaven/Dieppe route doesn't save much fuel and takes a lot longer than Dover/Calais, it seems to only be about 80 miles shorter via that crossing. But if it fits your plans for providing an overnight stop then it might work out well.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

You are right, the only reason that I look at that crossing is because we could all get some sleep...at a relatively normal time.
If the ferry leaves at 11pm then i would assume that boarding would commence at maybe 10.30pm?
I am not too sure about that though.
If its only 80 miles shorter than that is only an hours driving time

I haven't totally written off the Dover to Calais route yet.
I need to plan in a bit more detail, and get my head around all options

I have pressed the thank you button of everyone who has contributed to this thread. :)
I will add stuff on here as I think of it

Do you use headlight beam benders when you are abroad in your car?

I'm not Katrina, but when abroad use headlamp adaptors.
