Someone bumped my parked car

Hi guys,

Last night I parked my car up for the night while visiting a friend.

When I arrived home I noticed a scrape on my car where a white car had clearly hit my car overnight.

I went back and noticed the house opposite where I had parked has a white car which can't be any coincidence.

Obviously I have no solid evidence of whether this was them that did it (unless I go back and there is clear damage)

What is the best way of going about this?

My initial thoughts are:
-Knock on their door and politely ask if they accidentally damaged my car
-Ask the police for advice and maybe they will go round on my behalf and ask
-Call my insurance company and give them the address, the insurance policy will include legal cover

Thanks

Unless you can get some evidence forget it.

They won't admit it, the Police won't want to know and all you'll do is create friction in the neighbourhood....... Depending on how popular they are versus yourself, this friction might become intolerable.

Without evidence, making accusations will only serve to damage yourself.
    which can't be any coincidence.

My neighbour probably thought this when she accused me of popping her grandsons football, it came over the fence, therefore I must have damaged it before throwing it back. Shallow logic.................

Is there any of your paint on his/her car? If so you might try taking photos and asking the police. Failing to report the accident is crime. They might be interested if there is evidence, but maybe not the way things are these days.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

The police will want a witness not speculation about paint transfer.

None of these has any legs if they did it but don't want to admit it.

If you don't hear from them today assume you now realistically only have these options:

    1) Live with the damage

    2) Pay for the repairs yourself

    3) Make an insurance claim if you have comprehensive cover (pay your excess and lose NCD unless you have it protected) which will go on your record as a fault claim and affect your premium over the next 3/5 renewals depending on the length of claim history you are asked about

And here lies the flaw in your arguement.

The police or your insurers wont give 2 hoots unless you have independent witnesses.

I'd go and ask if they saw anything - they might be honest and admit they did it (if they did!). Maybe ask some other neighbours too so it doesn't look like you're accusing them.

If they were honest they would have left a note on the damaged car.

I once had somebody knock on my door and accuse me of hitting their car. I was livid as it was a lie, but a neighbour had told the guy that he had seen me hit the car. It was probably that neighbour that hit his car and lied to cover up. :rotfl:
