I know someone whose brother is sadly dying of lung cancer from working with asbestos in the 1960s shipyard.

There is two sorts blue not so bad and white which is very dangerous.

I live in a NIHE flat build in the early 50s, about 4 years ago I had a queue of men wanting to look in my roof space and taking photos. I was considering charging as a tourist attraction at one point. I did know what they where looking for asbestos, we all knew it was up there. I joked about it none of them would comment. They were putting in new kitchens round the estate and because I am an upstairs flat had to remove it first. I was out of my flat for 4 days and 3 nights. Some others freaked out especially those who had bought their homes after original buyers from the NIHE had moved out. They were not happy at the amounts on offer to help them remove it.

Incidentally, I was asked to look at the plumbing in a house on Strandmillis Road a few years back, the roof space still had lead pipes! Still in use for the drinking water, now, that would worry me somewhat, but didn't seem to have done the elderly residents any harm!

They were only in their 30's, it's brutal stuff that lead :D

Much better to be preserved for aeons by eating lots of salt, drinking plenty of alcohol and smoking 60 a day. This will keep you preserved, salted, steeped in alcohol, Smoked. This should keep you fresh for many years.

I second that. In fact asbestos was being used legally in building right into the 1980's as far as I know.

It would be interesting to find out how many leisure centres built in the 1970's and 1980's have asbestos in them.
and schools, libraries, hospitals, government buildings etc........ also all the houses that have asbestos roof tiles, really if it was that dangerous N.I would come to stand still, yes there is a health concern but typical council to blow it out of all proportion
