As this is my local leisure centre and our kids swimming lessons have now all been cancelled since February with no sign of re-opening, needless to say I'm well Pee'd off... Obviously Castlereagh Council thought they could just shift the issue onto Belfast when they "took over".... now it's all just a bl00dy big mess with the local public loosing out.
Castlereagh say's it's safe, Belfast says not.... obviously it's all now about money and which body should pay for what.... all while we lose out..... just get the bl00dy thing sorted and sort out who pays for what after like proper grown ups....
What a disgrace.....

I believe the gym etc is back open from today, however I have no date as to when the swimming pool will be open again.0 -
If there was even a rumour of asbestos in the place, I'd never take my kids there.
And as a Belfast City ratepayer, there's no way I want my rates to be paying for an expensive renovation of a Castlereagh property that coincidentally found asbestos 2 months before they could fob it off.0 -

Asbestos itself in an undisturbed stable form where it is/has or cannot be damaged is NOT harmful to anyone. It's the free fibres in the air that are dangerous when it is worked on or broken up..... If you would never go to a place where there is Asbestos present you'd never enter a building built pre 70's.... You'd be amazed how many old houses have roofs, tiles, flues etc that have asbestos in them..
I do agree though that Castlereagh have been a bit sneaky on this..... However I recon this is all down to who will pick up the tab for dealing with the asbestos rather than a safety matter....
I was under the impression anyway that the Robinson Centre was going to be replaced in the future.. why not just get on and do it now....0 -
I second that. In fact asbestos was being used legally in building right into the 1980's as far as I know.
It would be interesting to find out how many leisure centres built in the 1970's and 1980's have asbestos in them.0 -
Was Castlereagh, now Belfast. So are all the ratepayers around it, so Belfast can take the new money they're taking off them, and pay for the removal. Or leave it since a report says it's safe (and it is if undisturbed).
Obviously not just the neighbours use it, but BCC has just been gifted a potentially slightly dodgy leisure centre. Repair won't cost as much as rebuilding.
If they think Castlereagh are shoddy with leisure centres, they must have a short memory about Maysfield!0 -

Hard to find a building above a certain age without asbestos. I used to use it to seal flue pipes and around fireplaces, think fibreglass is used now. There must be tons of it in structures, but it's doing no harm, big witch hunt. Incidentally, I was asked to look at the plumbing in a house on Strandmillis Road a few years back, the roof space still had lead pipes! Still in use for the drinking water, now, that would worry me somewhat, but didn't seem to have done the elderly residents any harm!0 -

It's probably why they're still alive!! Trace Elements and all that0 -
just read something about it being in a wall that's been damaged...
So either re-render and tile over it, or seal it up and build up a new stud wall in front of it and jobs sorted.
Why make a mountain out of a molehill??0 -

Keeps asbestos as a high profile bogey man, and removal prices suitably inflated. Vested interests at play?0 -
Problem is no councillor is going to want their name on a bit of paper saying "its safe" when in 10 years time little timmy might get sick when a tiny bit leaks.0
