Economy 7

I recently moved into a home with no gas supply and use storage heaters.

They used to heat up from Midnight to 7:30 a.m, since the clocks changed last weekend the heaters heat up at 1a.m to 8:30 a.m.

I think the cheaper tariff ends at 7a.m or 7:30a.m.

Do I need to adjust something to get the heaters to heat up 1 hour earlier?

Do you actually have an independent timer that controls the times the NSHs come on?

If so, are you sure what time your E7 low rate actually is effective?

Would you not think, in such circumstances, it would be prudent to ensure the NSHs are set to come on during the cheap rate only?

If the meter has an old-style clockwork timer then it will always be an hour out during BST. Assuming it's not hours out already, which many are.
More modern E7 installs are tele-switched.

The cheap rate timing is not affected by the clocks going back.

This means that the switch over times will be 1 hour "later" when British Summer Time is in effect.

Normally, the storage heaters are triggered by the meter switching to cheap rate. They automatically synchronise with cheap rate even if the meter timing changes.

We had a modern one in our old flat and that wasn't tele-switched either, it was always 1 hour out in BST.

It's just another part of E7/NSH to get used to.

Our NSH were directly controlled by the time-switch, but we did have to change the timers on all our other appliances manually.

    Thanks for the helpful replies.

After always having gas fired central heating I am not that impressed with these storage heaters but will try to get used to them.

The meter is a digital one.

There are no separate controls for the heating (there is for hot water).

I Googled and found out the economy 7 times from this webpage.

  • Hi,

if you don't already do so, the later hour in the morning will allow you to use the cheap rate for washing machine, tumble dryer, cooking etc.

Had one yesterday . pointed out to a happy man that the cheap rate was on at 2 pm in the afternoon and going off at 7 pm ish . He s now very happy but upset that hes been timing his washer to come on in the night for the last 12 years..He wont complain because he knows they will change the meter. Anyone with an analogue timer switch needs to examine the switch. Its has an "on " and " off" section on it and a pointer to show what time it thinks it is when you view it.

Funny you should mention that, I was thinking this morning I could set the washing machine going at 7a.m and it will finish within the lower tariff time.

We did this with loads of appliances when we had E7.

    Washing machine
    Tumble drier
    Oil heater
    Dehumidifier
    Chargers for portable devices

All on timers and all using cheap rate.
