If it's the same as their normal debit card you'll get charged 2.75% on the exchange rate plus £1.50 per transaction - whether cash withdrawal or payment.

So for cash get as much out as possible to minimise the number of charges - only not so much that you end up bringing a lot home!

  • ring them at least 24 hours before you go and tell them the dates you will be gone so they don't block the card.

Watch out! Shops in Spain they are quite keen to do their own Currency Conversion. Your card does not get charged with a certain amount in Euros, but gets instantly converted (at a bad rate) into GBP.

You are supposed to have a choice, whether you want to be charged in the local currency or in the currency of your card. Quite often, they do not give you a choice and just want you to confirm a transaction in GBP. (Where the shop gains.)

This might (probably) won't be the rate that Halifax would apply.
  • I was including the 2.75% fee in the exchange rate so it would have been for that day.
