Laptops hit the point of being good enough for that stuff 10 years ago, just buy the cheapest one you can find with a screen big enough to work from (say, 15") as everything else will be fine.
For very modest use and a modest price no point buying a 15" model. In fact, unless you pay for better resolution and quality, 15" laptops' screens are hideous to use.

Enfield Freddy that was a great post, at least I think it was, it's all gobblygook to me :o

Seriously though I'm after some recommendations. The machine will be used for no more than web surfing, watching YouTube and occasionally a little online TV though I tend to use Chromecast now. And a little light office work. It will store photographs and music and that's about it

I don't do gaming or Skype calls

So how about some suggestions with say a budget of £350 would that get me anything decent. (could go to £375 in a push)

I bought an acer aspire E15-571 recently from amazon for around £350. 1TB intel core i3-403OU 4GB DDR3.

For your needs, a Chromebook may be an option, there's a nice refurbished one from Argos on Ebay (I was looking at it for myself)...

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HP-14-Q010sa-Celeron-14-Inch-4GB-16GB-Chromebook-White-/171523121906?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item27ef9322f2

Same item (new not refurbished) I've seen for about £100 more. So that's a good price I think.

For your use anything will do the execution job.

(I have a net book that can do all your stuff running an atom with 1gb memory screen a bit small for some tasks)

    Focus on the other things.

    screen size/resolution,
    Weight if using portably
battery life, if on the move away from power a lot
full HDMI out if connecting to TV.
    etc

You might even find a tablet with external keyboard/screen for office tasks would work.
  • Yes screen size is important. I like to be able to read comfortably. I'll really be using it as you would a desktop except I can sit in comfort and kind of watch the TV at the same time :D

Must admit I had forgot about the Outlet shops. It may be worth while keeping an eye on the like of Argos for the next month or so.

My colleague has had an Acer for a few years now and speaks well of it.

Thanks for all the advice to date

When you say almost dead I take it you are referring to its performance rather than its hardware. If that is the case why not save yourself £200+ and just backup your data and reinstall windows?
