It's a bit of a gamble to assume from a hunch someone will be a sound employee. In my experience, the ones that look good on paper and fail to turn up are probably holier-than-thou narcissists that would make for terrible employee relations.

I would either continue interviewing or move forward the best clutch to date.

    And that's a sweeping statement.

My point is that if someone looks good on paper, and asks to reschedule due to illness, personally I'd take an hour out of my time if it means I may get a better employee. Get the right candidate in and it makes my working life easier in the long run.

If that person is not the candidate they appeared on paper, well I've lost an hour, but I'm not left wondering.

Difference of opinion, happens all the time.

For the OP, some will reschedule, some won't, don't think you are hurting your chances by asking, they can only say no.

If the op asks and they say no what do you suggest he does then?
Agree to attend even though minutes before he was telling them he was to unwell to attend!

OP stated the interview was on Thursday, as I posted originally...

I'd phrase it along the lines that I don't think I'd do myself justice while feeling this poorly, so if it could be moved back to the next working day it would help out a lot, if not I will still be attending, as I really want the post.

Given it is a long bank holiday weekend, the next working day may not fall until Tuesday, which would at least give some time to recover.

You miss my point, if he asks to reschedule as he is to unwell to attend and they say no then the op would have to back track and let them know he would attend the interview that 2minutes before he was to unwell to attend.
Also a lot of companies only schedule limited days of interviewing and I doubt they would agree to put in an extra slot for someone that claims he is too unwell with a minor illness to attend the first interview.

without starting an argument over a minor thing, we are responding to the OP's original post...
I was just invited to interview yesterday at a company I would love to work for and the interview is on Thursday.

This does not give any detail about the post or the company, I work in an area which is difficult to recruit quality candidates into, and personally, I would reschedule for the right candidate. If it is in an area where the quality employees are 2 a penny, then I would agree with you that it is unlikely to be rescheduled.

The OP advised he has flu, this is hardly a minor illness, my wife died aged 35 from the effects of flu, it can be fatal.

In the end, no-one can tell OP what to do because either way, they are taking a risk. The likely outcome will be dependent on a number of factors, the industry, whether the job is likely to attract a lot of applications, whether they are the perfect candidate for it or not, number of people on the interview panel, whether they need to travel on the day, how busy there are etc...

I'll be interviewing for a role shortly. If anything we had too many applicants who do meet the minimum requirements. We will be interviewing them all, but if one said they couldn't come because they are ill, it would actually make our life easier and certainly wouldn't offer another date as it is unlikely me and my colleague could find another slot together for at least another 2 weeks and we want to recruit asap.

It would be bad luck for the candidate, but that's life.

Just to say it goes both ways, I applied for a job which at the time I thought was my dream job except that the interview date was whilst I was on my honeymoon 1000s of miles away. I did ask if there was any chance to be interviewed before going, but I knew my chances were very low even though I met all the criteria. Sure enough, never heard back! Frustrated at the time, but another perfect job offer came not that long afterwards!
  • Hi OP

Were you well enough, did you go for interview? :)
  • Hello

Thanks everyone for your opinions. On the day of interview I was feeling a little better so decided to try and push through it as I didn't want to miss the opportunity. Not sure how I was perceived in the end to be honest, but at least I tried.

Many thanks again folks for your input. Hope to hear next Thursday about their decision.
