Thanks for all the comments and suggestions, you guys have been a great help :T
My OH wants a C1 or Aygo but the Panda looks promising. Our budget probably won't get us much newer than around 07 but we intend getting it from a reputable dealer so will at least have some form of protection in case of any early problems.
We will have a look at the Hyundai i10 too but please keep the suggestions coming!

Residuals on Pandas are unfortunately (for you) pretty good.
That is why I buy them accident damaged from Copart
That is also why I know parts prices are cheaper than most.0
