This thread has been taken over with an argument about bios batteries, which is a random diagnosis that completely ignores the evidence provided by the op.

Google dead ThinkPad and there is a "secret code" that you use the power button to enter, Disconnect the power and battery, push the power button 10 times at 1 second intervals than hold it down for 30 seconds. Connect power and the laptop then springs to life when you hit power.
Why, No idea, best guess (as I don't work for Lenovo) is that the pushing power while the device is without power or battery discharges any residual current in the system, and causes a full reset.
Why is this relevant to the BIOS battery , because the CMOS is what controls how it boots and handles issues at boot time, and so any problems with the CMOS not being powered correctly or corrupted can give rise to these issues.0 -

Say what you want, I know it sounds like round spherical objects, but it worked on thinkpads on work where we were about to replace the system board.0
