I have a website , its used as a shop , and there is a directory that I upload photo,s and PDF files , to be linked to on sites like this ,
I have set up a simple fttp upload thu windows explorer
I often struggle with the numbering of the files
if you type the site (not hiding it) www.theterminalhut.com , the site is there , however the files are in www.theterminalhut.com/public , unless you type the exact file name in , you get a dead link.
I would like to make the directory view like this:

probably a .htaccess file in the directory ....look up htaccess and apache

and this
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/mod/core.html#directory0 -
there is a file called .htaccess in that folder (you might even be able to access it) , followed a load of ideas last year but did,t work . have just renamed it .htaccess.conf , don,t know if that's better.
