The FSCS is a financial body but they don't do help with PPI claims (nor are they a claims firm), they basically provide compensation for customers affected by certainly financial issues (such as miss-sale of products where the firm has gone bankrupt). You would not go direct to them for a PPI claim in most cases.
If you had PPI sold to you in 2007 then you would complain in the first instance to Welcome explaining why you feel you were miss-sold and why - as they appear to have gone under you would be able to approach the FSCS about the claim

Don't use a claims firm, they simply take a chunk of your refund for posting off a complaint - you still do all the workSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Result... for any one interested...
I went straight through the fscs.org.uk to Welcome Finance, its all on their website, they gave me my details i lost and account numbers that i claimed under and i then had to contact Aviva as they were the insurance underwriters dealing with the ppi claims, they dealt with my ppi claim fast over the phone and now i will be getting my ppi payments back to me. It was quite hassle free, a tidy sum is coming back my way in about a months time, quick and painless. all through the fscs site. Brilliant and a result for me. A little self determination pays off.0 -

They actually did help with my ppi.
I went to the contact page >>>
http://www.fscs.org.uk/contact-us/
Rang the number;
0800 678 1100 then ext 3 for Welcome Finance and your straight through to them.
They do all the searching for you. Have a pen and paper ready for your policy details. Then I had to ring Aviva. It was very easy.0 -

My wording might be a bit unclear, they don't do help as in won't raise a case against a firm nor will they do a PPI complaint - in cases where they have already been setup, such as Welcome, they will do as there is an established process - for any other firm not on their radar (i.e. still trading) they would expect you to follow the normal complaints process.
In addition you get 90% of any premiums and WFSL are allowed to offset any refund against outstanding debts so it's not as straightforwardSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

The good thing is I'm not paying anyone 30% and that makes me very happy. Unfortunately i made the mistake of using Stanton Fisher in the past to make a claim and they demanded 30% which i thought was outrageous for a simple phone call or email.

Sorry, but this is very confusing. FSCS don't deal with PPI claims over the phone, you have to fill a complaint form in. They only deal with PPI bought after 2005.
If Aviva dealt with your complaint, it means you bought your PPI before 2003. If bought between 2003 and 2005, Welcome would have dealt with it themselves.
So when did you buy your PPI and who actually dealt with your complaint?0
