How would you have answered?

Phew - it looks like I wasn't being a complete wombat by not knowing the answer!

I answered that I only had one account and was told they couldn't verify who I was. But fortunately the Customer Services person was able to give me a generic answer that solved my original query.

Later this afternoon I logged on to my Bank of Scotland internet banking (to do something completely unrelated) and my Halifax account appeared as the 4th account on my screen: so I'm guessing the answer should have been four accounts.

Hopefully it will all be worth it when I get my switching bonus (and no it's not one of my 3 Bank of Scotland accounts that I'm using for switching!)

Yes - the Halifax security checks on numbers of accounts etc. include any Bank of Scotland accounts you may hold (although not Lloyds) as HBOS is integrated into the same system.

A fraud check once asked me the same question and I fell foul the same as you and have never forgot it. I was so annoyed how ridiculous some security questions are. Another favourite is what amount was your last transaction for and the account in question hadn't been used for 2 years!

Pretty stupid security question as I bet the huge majority of the population have either 1 2 or 3 accounts with any particular bank.

Better off asking shoe size or waist size when you were 18 (28" !). Or something impossible to guess like some digits from your mobile/home number or memorable address from the past.

No imagination these banks.
