Vacuums & pet hair

Hi all,
I'm tempted to buy a new vacuum cleaner as I have a cat. At the moment I have a Henry, and used it a few years. It's been fine as I make little mess, though it is a bit fiddly on places like the stairs etc. As I now vacuum more, I figure a better cleaner is needed.
Having seen this new VAX discount on MSE, it's worth considering one. However, I am unsure which would be the best for the cat hair - logic would suggest would advertised with 'pet' in the name of it, though reading some of the reviews others seem better! (such as the Air3 - typically out of stock). So fellow pet owners / domestic gods, any recommendations for a bargain vacuum cleaner that works well on relatively deep pile carpets?
I was originally thinking of the Gtech vacuums, though the thought of a bargain price is more alluring. :j

Do you want upright or cylinder?0

You need something with a beater bar for pet hair removal. We just bought a dyson dc59 animal for cleaning up after the cats.0

Which classes the miele c3 complete cat and dog the best vacuum they have ever tested, I have one with a dog snd cat and it is fantastic, also surprisingly quiet.0

Cat/dog/pet are simply marketing terms, and usually mean the same machine but with some different tools included. If you want good fur/hair removal then (as above) you need a beater bar, which means an upright, or a cylinder with a turbo headNo free lunch, and no free laptop

Unless you have a pet with long hair, in which case you spend all your time cutting the hair from the bar or head , stopping the vaccuum altogether.:mad:0 -
You can get a "hairobrush" for Henry which is about as effective as the brush bars you see on "pet" vacuum cleaners - note that it's not a powered brush bar hence why I wrote "about as effective".
If you've got a long hair animal (we have very fluffy longhaired cats), be aware that you'll be spending a lot of time 'cleaning' the brush bar of any "pet" vacuum cleaner. Gtech (and indeed Henry's Hairobrush) is particularly awful for this as you can't remove the brush bar, you have to cut hair off while it's still in the machine. Not an easy job. I'm not sure there are many brush bars you can remove to clean nowadays now they've become powered *sniff*.
After trying lots of vacuums I would say stick with Henry!0 -
Miele cat and dog. Best vacuum I've ever used. love it0

Thank you all. I did wonder about the marketing of the vacuums as I couldn't see any physical differences to the other uprights! I'm specifically looking at the VAX ones as they're on offer.
Shame that the Air3 Compact Upright Vacuum Cleaner is sold out as that has great reviews and was cheap!"The future needs a big kiss"0 -
Several of the 'pet' models have just a turbo attachment which is only used when the hose connection is used.
We have an under £60 Hoover brand Including a free rechargeable handheld) bought from Makro a couple of years ago and it's fine with our long coated cavaliers.
We also have a GTECH AirRam (not the 'pet' model) and hair removal isn't to bad, as it's easier to cut from the brush bar than with a larger conventional upright. The lightness of use is worth the hassle though.0
