Shoddy electric works, help!

Had an electrician do the electrics for our loft conversion recently, work was completed and all seemed in order so we settled up.

However, immediately afterwards the loft lights started being problematic - when theyre on and we turn the en suite light on also the loft lights turn off for about 2 seconds before turning back on. Also when the loft lights go on initially there is a slight delay and the lighs come on in different order each time (theres about 7 in total).

Finally, one of the hallway lights is extremely dim, we've tested it by switching the bulbs around and its definately the light, not the bulb!

As soon as we realised thsi we contacted electrician who promised to return and set things right, he commented the loft lights dimmer switch was under warranty and probably faulty. However, despite promising to come on certain days/times at least 4 times he has failed to show each time. This work was done and finished in november 2014 therefore we've been extremely patient and i am now fed up.

My understanding is all we can really do is tell him we'll need to get someone else to sort it out and charge it on to him, but if he doesnt pay we'd need to take to small claims court, is this correct or is tere anything else anyone can suggest??

Have you put anything in writing?

It's very hard to prove you've fulfilled your part of the procedure by allowing him to return and sort things out if there is no paper trail. It's your word against his.

If there's nothing written yet, write and give him a reasonable deadline to return to correct this. Follow that up with a second letter x2 if he doesn't show, posted with proof of posting from two POs.

That will satisfy the small claims court that he received the communication and failed to respond.
  • Thanks, the issue is we dont have the address to write to. Our project manager for the loft conversion brought him in however we settled the bill directly. I am trying to get the full details off of project manager, he has tried to contact him numerous times but his calls are being avoided!

All communication with electrician was done by phone and text which im guessing isnt sufficient evidence.

Wondering if the project manager shoukd perhaps be sorting this out and if necessary paying for remedial work?

I'd be onto the project manager saying you're not happy with the guy he got in on recommendation and you'd like his contact details.....

If you are not happy with the electricians work and if he still refuses to put right then get another opinion from another qualified electrician along with what is needed to put the job right and invoice the first...
