    I think Santander ask for the PIN - though they do have ways round it

    Lloyds don't ask for the pin at the deposit machines.

    You can use the Post Office to deposit money in numerous banks - I make cash and cheque deposits into Lloyds at my local post office and no pin is required.

    I've got a recently opened TSB account. I paid in a cheque last week and gave them the debit card, but wasn't asked for my pin.

    Santander has/used to have boxes in which to deposit an envelope containing cheques. I found this great as it would take 30 seconds to do the job.

    I went to a London city branch where they had dispensed with this... you had to use the ATM to deposit a cheque, needing your debit card, but you do get a nice scan of your cheque. No PIN required unless you wanted to take cash out ( I think)

    I asked at another branch and was told they were keeping their deposit box! It would be unfortunate to dispense with the box as it's quick, you don't need to carry your debit card unnecessarily, and as sometimes you may need to deposit a cheque into someone's account on their behalf (e.g. a carer)

    I did raise this with Santander "Customer Services", where a youth of some sort phoned the branch I had visited and repeated to me the same things they had, as his "investigation". They also told me that this prevented "fraudulent cheques" but I simply can't see how this would be....surely the cheques have to be processed in exactly the same way regardless of how they entered the banking system?

    Can anyone explain if they make any sense as I am considering raising this with the CEO of Santander

    Can anyone add to the questionmark of how dispensing with cheque deposit boxes would "prevent fraudulent cheques", please?

    I want to raise this with the CEO office, but if there's a good reason, then I don't want to waste my time or look sheepish!!

    PIN is needed, paying in a cheque is just a sub menu of the cash machine.

    The cheque bin could be a PITA with incorrectly filled paperwork etc whereas the cash machine links the cheque directly with an account straight away, less staff work. More likely a business cost decision than a fraud one.
