We have a large open plan kitchen/diner but also a separate lounge/reception room at the other end of the flat so if we have friends over we can cook/entertain/eat in the the kitchen/diner, but can also eat in the lounge if we want to escape cooking smells/washing machine noise etc.

developers go for open plan because the rooms are small and pokey.

The problem with open plan living is that you spend all your time with your other half. I prefer her to spend more time in the kitchen, cooking preparing meals and washing up etc than having her continually trying to chat to me about this and that and what she has done today, blah, blah blah.

Open plan for me. The only doors I want in my house are privacy doors..... bedrooms, bathrooms etc.
