Ethical stocks and shares ISA

Hi there

I was hoping someone might be able to give me some advice. I am in my late 20s, and able to save about £500/ month which is currently going into a cash ISA. I'm planning to use those savings towards a deposit for a flat, but given that that will take me a few years, I'd quite like to start saving for the longer-term too.

I've been told that stocks and shares ISAs are a good bet and I can afford to put an extra £50 aside each month towards this. However, I'm really keen to put my money into something more ethical. The Triodos ethical stocks and shares ISA would be ideal but they require an initial starting point of £1,000.

I'd rather not take £1,000 out of the savings for my deposit (currently in a cash ISA) - does anyone know of a similar ethical stocks and shares ISA that has a lower starting rate?

Thank you very much!

Look at performance rates of ethical trusts to see if those rates are for you.

Then look at what you consider ethical or not. Some are more strict than others.

Some regular funds might meet your own ethical requirements over others.

Sorry, don't know of any 'ethical' ISA; in any case their ethics may not be your ethics.

Are you aware that you could be getting 6% AER on your regular savings, and 3% or more AER on up to £50,000 on lump sums?

Ethical funds are not all the same. They each focus on a range of ethics. There is a measure for each ethical fund which allows you to filter the ones that do or do not match your chosen ethics.

Charging a 3-5% initial fee doesn't seem very ethical to me.

The quoted initial purchase amount usually only applies if you are buying the fund from the manager. If you are going through an online broker you can buy as much or as little as you want.

If you look up the details of the popular Vanguard LS 100 fund an initial purchase of £100K requirement is specified!

An ISA is purely a wrapper for investment that protects it from tax.

You can put any investment inside it so totally your choice what they are, ethical or not. Some fund supermarket ISAs start at £25 so have a look and see if that have the investments you want.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
