Noisy vibration from roof or drainpipe in wind

I've just had some UPVC guttering and dripfelt replaced, due to leaks. I've also had two cracked tiles repaired and 'repoint & valleys with new mortar work' according to invoice.

However, I'm sure the wind noise has got worse. The problem is a vibrational resonance during gusts, and you can only hear it upstairs so it keeps you awake on windy nights.

This happened the last time an aerial was secured, (ironically it's always when something is fixed) but that workman thought it was the vertical drainpipe which was vibrating. Is it more likely to be fascia, guttering or loose tiles?

Of course it's difficult to be sure it's down to the repair, it might be just more windy of late.

I suggested to the workman who has just finished the guttering to fix more brackets to be put on the vertical drainpipe, but he forgot to do the upstairs part!

Has anyone experienced something like this, and managed to locate the problem? it is notoriously difficult to hear from the garden, but loud in the bedroom where you can't see it, so it's a wild goose chase!

    OH YES !!!

Mine was the downpipe at the rear of my house. Only used to happen with wind from one particular direction.

Yeah that sounds familiar, since high winds sometimes don't have any effect. Unfortunately, it's West facing!

He has done little to the downpipe though, except connect it to the gutter pipe. Anyway he wasn't cheap so won't feel too embarrassed about calling him back.

My guess is that it's the connection between the gutter and down pipe, as suggested in this last post. He's coming to have a look tomorrow.

I can imagine it would be easy, even for a good experienced fitter, to leave something just loose enuff to only be a problem when the wind blows above a certain speed or from a certain direction.

I seldom judge tradesmen on the quality of their work, if the quality isn't there then it's US who made the bad decision to employ them. I tend to judge them on their response if/when problems arise. If they handle the exceptions well then you know you've found a good one.

When you've found a good one . . . start telling others so that they can share. If we all shared our knowledge of the good tradesmen as readily as we moan and whinge about the bad ones, then maybe the bad ones wouldn't get so much work !

I had a look today with binoculars in high wind, with the noise rumbling away, and there is nothing vibrating that is visible.

Problem, is this can be so many things and it's difficult to reproduce. This is the other thing I suspected. Since there was no felt installed in the right place before.
just opened the bathroom window and noticed it's the under felt chattering against the soffit and guttering, makes the most awful noise!

.......I see (though not hear) this alot where some plastic DPC felt has been inserted at the eaves and draped into the gutter - usually after a fascia replacement or where the existing felt has rotted at the eaves and some polypropylene felt slid in.

This stuff felt is too thin and reverberates in the wind.

There should be a proper plastic eaves tray fitted, or at least some thick EPDM sections which will be more UV stable than bituminous DPC felt

I have a vibrating noise which comes from the felt which overlaps the
guttering on our roof ( sounds like a birds wings flapping )

I've suggested looking for loose tiles as well, but he's not too keen on that idea.

It was rumbling so much last night in the gusts, I tried to sleep downstairs but could even hear it there. Earplugs too uncomfortable, fan doesn't block the noise. Sleeping tablets helped eventually, but noise stopped after 3am after wind changed direction. Of course now the wind has changed slightly to the North of West all has gone quiet. So there is nothing to hear today despite the wind being as strong.

He thinks it may be due to the ventilation slots on the soffits which may cause it to vibrate like a giant horn, but he is placing an extra bracket on the downpipe as well. I thought that might explain why it's got worse since the felting over the drains might be forcing more air through there?

My guess is that I will have to go up there myself or crawl in the attic to locate the problem when the noise happens, or even get one of those wireless cameras and mic.
  • Hi cepheus, I've just joined up here and was wondering if you found the source of the vibration?

My house has been suffering from a loud vibration though the night for the last 6 months which is dreadful to try and sleep through.

So if you did find the problem, could let me know what it was. Maybe somthing similar is happening in my house.

    Thanks for reading.
