Bought a car, but don't have the car

I can understand the deposit bit... but why would you pay the rest before you actually get the car? I've always paid the lump sum at the point the car is stood there ready to be inspected and driven away.
I am guessing that the dealer wanted the money up front to pay the seller, before the seller would give them the car.0 -
You buy car tax online by putting in the reg number and your bank details. I've just done it - the dealer gave me their computer to do it before I drove away. You don't need the V5C in your possession.
I don't think you can. Can you provide a link?To apply online you'll need either:
the 16 digit reference number on your vehicle tax renewal letter (V11)
the 11 digit reference number on your log book (V5C)
the 12 digit reference number on your New Keeper Supplement (V5C/2) if you've just bought the vehicle0 -
and insurance showing on the vehicle , if its sat untaxed at a dealers its not insured on the road unless trade plates are used0

Thank you for the replies:
The car was paid for before it was handed over as we were told the car would be ready by the end of that week and as mentioned we thought it was a reputable dealership. We have since been in contact with them again and they have now reported we should receive the car this week (with a full tank of petrol by way of apology).
If we can take the car without having the log book then that will most likely be a next tactic if this doesn't resolve this week - providing that is in fact legal.0 -

Reputable or not I'd have told them... Car ready at the end of the week? Then you can have the money at the end of the week.
If that wasn't good enough for them, walk away.
Plenty more fish or indeed used-cars in the sea.0
