Compare Utility Bills - Storage Heater

Afternoon

I am trying to compare prices for my in-laws utility bills, but am struggling with the electricity as they are on an EDF Warm Wise tariff as they have storage heaters.

They have a split meter - with a reading for standard use, and a second set for Day/Eve&Weekend and Night readings.

Anybody any ideas as to how to "work" this in the comparison websites?

Do I treat it like economy 7 or is there a better way?

Thanks in advance for any help.

What exactly are you attempting to do?

No other supplier will support your in-laws current set up.

    Thanks for this.

I'm trying to save them some money, as they are on with British gas standard tariff for gas and EDF warm wise standard for electricity, they call quarterly with readings and then pay by cheque on receipt of bill.

At present they have a different feed from the two storage heaters they have into a different meter than the main house supply.

Moving Gas supplier can save around £200 - based on the last 12 months kWh, but electricity is impossible to compare.

Could the meter(s) be changed to an economy 7 one and operate the same way?

Don't really understand the storage heater concept, but aside from a gas fire in the front room, no other heating system in the house...

    Thanks for help and guidance.

Your in-laws could request EDF to change the meter if they wish, but I would suggest you first get them to seek the advice of an independent electrican. The house may need re-wiring and new appliances may be required if they decide to do away with the current tariff.

Once all that is done, they would be on a compatable tariff that all suppliers will support. Whether that would ultimately save them money, who knows? You don't appear to.

I suggest you leave your inlaws to discuss matters (at least as far as their electricity supply is concerned) with their current electicity supplier, EDF :)

As said above you'll probably need some rewiring to get rid of your warmwise setup as the heating and hot water are on a separate circuits and fed by the low rate tariff. All other electricity is at the higher rate. You will probably also have to factor in a meter change and possibly a timer to control your heating & hot water to ensure that they only come on during the overnight low tariff period.

It's difficult to compare tariffs because EDF might be the only supplier that provides this sort of tariff in your area.

As you know warmwise allows you eight hours cheaper rate leccy at various times of the day whereas E7 only gives you cheaper leccy at night. However E7 does allow you to use cheaper leccy for other purposes overnight (such as washing, drying, dishwashing or even vacuuming or ironing) which warmwise doesn't.

You'd need to check if the heating would be adequate if it doesn't get the evening boost so you should check at what times you get the low tariff. You could try putting your high & low rate consumption figures in a comparison site to see if there is a saving by swapping to E7 but be aware that as the timings are different the figures will only be an indication of the costs.

I believe that Eon and SSE are the only other suppliers supporting this type of metering, if it's technically the same as E10.
It doesn't feature in comp site searches because it's of limited availability.
Since they already have mains gas to the property, then by far the cheapest way of heating it would be to install gas fires in other rooms-the fuel will then be about one third of the cost of standard rate electricity per kWh.
Two NSH's sounds like a partial system, which is pointless with E7/E10, as you have to top up with other forms of heating.

What is their electricity consumption for a year by combining all their separate readings?

If they use in total e.g of 10,000 kWh of electricity in a year, use that figure and if the comparison sites give a cost of £1,500 and they are spending less than that then they are on their cheapest rate.
