Hello hoping someone can help..........
A friend has had his DLA renewed and granted higher rate on both mobility and care indefinately.
Now will he automatically get his car road tax renewed or does he have to reapply for a certificate of entitlement.
Thanks for any replies
Why pay full price when you may get it YS ;)

  • He will have a Certificate of Entitlement, it has an entitlement number on it, as long as the Certificate of Entitlement is in force he will be entitled to the VED exemption. If he has no Certificate of Entitlement - apply for one.
will he automatically get his car road tax renewed

    - his personal VED exemption is automatic if his personal CofE is still in force
    - the cars exemption will have to be renewed each year on the cars due date

Thanks for the reply Richie, he wasn't sure if he needed a new C of E because his DLA had been renewed, he said he thinks his disc just came automatic last year and it expires on 30.4.15 and this year no disc system is in place.

Most people use the GOV portal so its all on line no need to even get out of the chair. The old [buff colour] entitlement certificate used to run out after 4 changes, the new one lasts forever or until the entitlement is withdrawn. There is and never was an automatic disc renewal system, you always had to [ask] re-apply each year, the reason for this is that he might die. The VED status is applied to the car, but the exemption is to the individual named in the CofE. Best of luck.

He has managed to speak with his daughter she applied online for him last year when the renewal came, so i think that's why he thought it had come automatic when infact she'd dealt with it on his behalf.

That's fine, good, I just wanted to avoid any confusion he may have had which would have led to not renewing the VED. Once the first VED has been issued through the portal all subsequent issues are much smoother as they already know all his details. All the MOT / Insurance, Vehicle Registration Certificate [V5C] and other details are already logged. He should receive a V11 reminder anyway. Best of luck my friend.
