Inappropriate reading book (in my opinion)

If the book is read then the parent can then see more clearly whether she thinks it's ok for her child. I didn't say "oh if it's ok for the parent its ok for the child".Never again will the wolf get so close to my door :eek:0

I haven't read the book so can't comment on that, but you seem to have talked to a lot of people about this including posting on Facebook. Why not just go and see the teacher involved and ask them about the book choice? It seems unfair to go straight to the head without having asked the teacher first!0

Why? In this situation the head needs to be informed. Like someone said I doubt the teacher could buy 30 books without authorisation so at least two people are involved in this decision. It might even be that the teacher is just following a theme that has been taught every year which needs investigating to see if it could be amended to be more suitable for the age of the children.
I certainly don't view going to the head as getting the teacher into trouble I view it as seeing if the teacher needs more training or help in making sure the work set is set at a correct level. Or if the schools themes for this year group need reviewing.0 -
Perhaps I worded my post wrongly. It was not in any way about the teacher getting into trouble but more out of politeness to the teacher and finding out the reasons for why the book is being use directly from the source. If you are not happy with the response then by all means go to the head. These days people seem to post on Facebook where it all gets whipped up into frenzy, rather than actually speaking to the teachers themselves.0

Due to my experience with the school I see things differently. I had an issue and spoke direct to the teacher, I was not happen with her response although I could see her point of view. I then felt I could not go to the head as I had already spoken to the teacher and felt that would look as if I was trying to get the teacher into trouble as I had already spoken to her. I wish I had gone direct to he head so maybe there could have been something put in place to try to avoid the same thing happening in future.
I do agree with the facebook thing - I stay well away from it!!0 -
I only found out more details about the book on Friday as my daughter is terrible at remembering to bring things home. I posted on Facebook as I know that some of her classmates friends on there and wanted to let them know.
Last night I flicked through the book and found scenes where characters were subjected to being slapped across the face and other areas. I read the sex scene and certainly don't want my daughter to read it. Whilst tastefully written, it is too much for her to know about.
Then there is the kidnapping and subsequent things that happen whilst the character is held hostage such as a knife being drawn across their fingers to make them bleed. Talk of abortion is mentioned and then at the end of the book details about a hanging and the description of the aftermath.
I stand by my decision of this being unsuitable for the children to read.0 -
OP is the book new? Is this the first year the class are reading it as I am surprised this has not come up before if other years have read it previously.
Do let us know how you get on and the response from the school.0 -

But how will the teacher, the head and the school view it? The answer to this will of course be different for different schools, and even probably different teachers within a school. But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

The book is about 15 years old, I remember reading it when it first came out when I was doing my GCSEs.0 -

Perhaps I worded the question badlyI meant is the book new/unused as is this the first year to have read it, have the school have just purchased the books?
If not I find it hard to believe than none of the parents who children have read it previously at the school have not raised concerns.
As a side point at GCSE level it does appear to be a very good book for children to read, I do believe children should read books that reflect what real life can be like - just not at 10 years old.0
