Ohhhh, that reminds me, I wasn't eight but it was the year I was 10 when I read this as it was the year I moved school, it was the first 'grown up' book I read. I had to do a summary of it at school and I got a B!Never again will the wolf get so close to my door :eek:0 -

I had read Dostoievski, Tolstoi, Proust and most of Dickens by the time I was 15 (Edit: I have reread it in English now). As well as The Famous Five and all...Believe me, 8 year olds are perfectly capable of reading "thick books with small writing.".0 -

Capable yes. I have a nearly eight year old who would be capable of reading the text in a book like that, however a page would take him a while to read there is no way his interested would hold long enough to finish the whole book (especially with a content that would not be of interested to the majority of eight year olds!). I appreciate all children are different but I still find it hard to comprehend any eight year old would complete the whole book. Someone mentioned they read it at 10, I can see at that age whilst it is still young children are beginning to have the ability to read books of that size.0 -

That's nothing, I completed my thesis on string theory when I was six. It would have been completed when I was five, but my professor couldn't read Latin!0 -
I remember reading Friedrich in middle school, I think I would have been 10 or 11? That was pretty harsh going

We got our son to read Shakespeare out loud when he was 4 as we wondered if he could.
Read the text absolutely fine - didn't understand a word of it though!
I have lovely memories of him reading the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet - then telling me he was bored and going back to his Lego :-)Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

Amazon Review
Noughts and Crosses is written with the passion of an author who has a personal message about the perception of the past, present and future, and Blackman has used the clever device of turning preconceived ideas of racial prejudice upside down to make sure that her point is well and truly made. Deeply disturbing and totally absorbing this novel is intriguing from the outset, with a shocking climax that packs an unforgettable punch. (Age 11 and over) --Susan Harrison
This is the Amazon review it says from age 11.0 -
My daughter had a friend in primary school who only ever wanted books, book vouchers, and more books. She spend all of her spare time reading, even reading out loud to her mates at parties while the bounced around on the trampoline!
Sea 16 now and she writes the most amazing stories. My daughter is still in awe of her.
She loved ghostly and haunting stories, probably stuff well beyond her years, but you couldn't stop that enthusiasm!
We have a distinct lack of love for literature.Never again will the wolf get so close to my door :eek:0 -
We have been up to the school. Didn't get to speak to her teacher as she had already left, so we were asked if we wished to speak to the deputy head.
The staff member went to get the deputy but she was in a meeting with social workers so was unable to see us.
However, we were told that the school are aware of complaints and are reviewing the matter and that the head will contact us and we were welcome to follow the matter up by emailing the school.
So it would seem that we are not the only parents who are unhappy about the choice of reading material.0
