Just had a thought - is it the actual current account that pays 4% or is it the separate The Club Lloyds Monthly Saver that pays 4% AER - or both?
ie pay in £1500 every month, £400 into monthly savings - £1100 shuffles back to the base account

    Both.

Remember that you also need 2 active monthly DDs with Lloyds' current account.

Tesco Bank is your little helper for the DDs.

    Way I do it is:

£1902 in via Standing Order every month.
£400 out to Monthly Saver via a SO.
    2 x £1 DD out.
£1500 out via SO back to my main current account (with another provider).

All the above happens within a 4-5 day period automatically every month.

You don't have to have mega bucks to do this i.e. you don't need £1902 every month. You're essentially using the same £1500 per month. All you really need is an extra £402 per month to top your main account.

Creaming off the interest is done manually every month for the current account.

OK that sounds easy enough - I was hoping that 2 SOs total £1100 back into the donor account would work but obviously not.
thanks for all of this useful info :T
