Problems with Chrome not closing

Had problems on my desktop Windows 7 ( x64) last year with Firefox consistently not closing.
Switched to Chrome which solved the problem for a while but now this is acting up.
Everything freezes or slows down considerably and I have to go into Task Manager to close down the programmes manually - sometimes there could be five or six still running even when I thought I'd closed them.
There's no pattern to them except they happen at least once or twice a day with the computer running all day.
I'd be grateful for any thoughts on this.

I have had this problem with a number of my clients but it does seem to be specific to certain builds where there is a memory leak. This worked for me:
Delete the entire contents of %localappdata%\Google\Chrome then reinstall Chrome with the latest version.
BEWARE: You will lose all history, saved passwords and bookmarks so back it up if you want to keep these.0 -

Slightly confused.
Are you saying back up passwords and bookmarks then delete Chrome completely and then re-install ?0
