Woodchip Wall Paper:

Options
I asked the workman for remove of all woodchip wall paper from living room/dinning landing wall and replace with painitng. If the plaster on the wall is not good to skim it before paiting it.

But he siad that he would fill all the cracks and holes on the wall in the plaster and put lining paper and then put a paint on it.

I am not sure how the lining paper will look. Should i go for this or should i go for skimming and then painting the walls.

I am complete novice this all.

My first choice would always be to have good walls that you can just paint, year after year after year... (well not every year...but you knew that I didn't mean that didn't you?! :o ) I don't like wallpaper, basically because I'm rubbish at hanging it, so paint has always seemed so much easier. I'm not keen on the look of paint over paper, so I would stick to your first idea.
  • I have to agree with never enough - painting over paper is generally the less preferable option. If you can afford to have the walls plastered I'd say go for it. It'll work out better in the long run as paper will eventually need to be replaced and the finish you get will be much better with just plaster.

Unless of course you're not going to be in the house for that long and cheap and cheerful (and letting old painted on paper be someone elses problem) may be the way to go.

There is nothing wrong with lining paper, it can and does look great if the person hanging it hangs it correctly.
Your walls would have to be pretty bad to have them skimmed, wheras lining paper, especially the heavy grade 1400, does make some bad walls look great, but you would still have to do your prep.
Dont forget lining paper is flat, and its meant to look like your walls have been skimmed.
I'll see if I can find a pic of a wall I have lined, as I line in 95% of my jobs, and it does have a nice finish.

Here is the dreaded woodchip that I had to take off.

here is prep I had to do before I even lined it.

And here is it lined and painted, the pic is taken from a different angle, but you can see how it looks with lining paper, theres not much difference to that and a skim.

As a complete amateur, I'd agree that lining paper can look really good, as long as the wall isn't too bad. I've done it in my downstairs loo. Alas, I've had to have my two downstairs rooms skimmed as they were pretty awful.

They are actually stripping the woodchip first, I hope?! When we stripped the wallpaper in one lounge it was a layer of (painted) anaglypta, followed by vinyl, followed by woodchip. I nearly lost the will to live while stripping that lot off.
