Where to sell a Rolex watch?

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but I can't think where else to put it. Mods please move delete as appropriate.

I've been left a gold coloured ladies Rolex Watch. It belonged to my MIL. There are no hallmarks, in fact it says stainless steel. So, I'm presuming gold plate.

It says 'Oyster Perpetual' under the Rolex name. There are little clear gems round the face.

I've no idea if it is of any value, but it isn't to my taste and as a family we would be better off with cash to invest. I can't even remember seeing my MIL wearing it, so not even any memories.

Should I just pop into a high street jeweler or one of those gold for cash places or a pawnbroker? :clueless:

If you are sure its real take it into an authorised Rolex dealer and see if they will send it for the valet service before selling it. They should be able to shed more light on it as well although google will be powerful in that regard. Quite a lot of Rolex watches hold their value very well if looked after. How old do you think it is? I think some of the older ladies ones are not worth that much but that is just something vague I might have heard someone say once.

+1 for a Rolex dealer, who can tell you if it's genuine for a start.

    Thank you both.

It is definitely real - my MIL liked nice things and would never have worn a fake. I would guess it dates to the 70s / early 80s.

I've found a local dealer, who I sort of know - we bought my wedding ring from them. They have a good established reputation, so I will pop in there with it. They said they will give me a valuation and sell it for me (or part ex) if I decide to part with it.

If it is of any reasonable value ensure that you get two or three valuations from reputable rolex dealers. Do no go with your local one just because its handy.

The difference offered between different dealers can be astonishing!

Whatever you do, DO NOT do any of the above!!!

If it what i think it is - steel, dual colour bracelet - an 'oyster' model - then its quite a valuable wristwatch - a dual colour, datejust (does it have a date window?) with diamond face (stones on each hour marker?) would have a very high new price. - probably £7-9k

that model listed above is NOT an oyster - its a dress watch and much less desirable.

take it to a dealer and actually take it to a few - do NOT say you "don't know anything about rolex's" - they will take advantage.

or - consider keeping it - its a timeless watch and good heirloom.

Get the model number from the serial number , if genuine the gold will not be plated either. Find one the exact same model for sale on the internet . That will give you an idea of how much it is worth . I would then sell privately , a jeweller will rarely pay you a decent price . Perhaps find a second hand dealer/jeweller and sell via them but only give them commission. Put a photo on here of it?

There seem to be a variety of such watches here - one like yours?

Where would the serial number be? I can't see one, and there are no hallmarks either. :/

I can't see how to upload photos.
