Where should we go?

OH and I are lacking inspiration for our next holiday...

I'm itching for a nice warm (c. 25 degrees C) , do nothing poolside break, but he'd be bored with this type of holiday and after a couple of days he'd want to 'do something'.

I'm ok with having a mixed holiday (some do nothing / do something) but I'm not very good being active in the heat so the temperature would need to accomodate both.

In terms of the 'do something' he's more interested in history, culture and exploring than mini-golf, water parks and night life.

We don't want to travel too far - 4 hours max on a plane maybe. We'd be looking for a week's holiday.
When we go is flexible and we might be prepared to hire a car if one was needed.

Any ideas of where we can get the best of both worlds?

We've done a holiday like this a few times in Italy. You can pick a beach resort near Venice, we stayed in Lido de Jesolo, and get the boat to Venice, Murano or Burano every other day. We've also stayed in Sorrento and gone through to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Naples and go the boat to Capri. Plenty of time for the beach/pool and lots to explore.

City + beach holiday make a great combination. Best of both worlds.

    Some suggestions
    1) Barcelona - spend a couple of nights in the city then move to one of the cheaper resorts along the coast
    2) Lisbon - the city itself doesn't have a beach but there are several just a short train ride away
    3) Greece - a couple of days in Athens doing the "culture" then head to one (or two) of the islands for the rest of your holiday.

    4) Malaga. Most people only pass through the airport, but it's a historic city with interesting areas, fortress and museums (read up about the amazing glass museum) , plus beach. Cheap flights esp if you can do something like a Tues-Tues holiday. Personally I prefer to stay somewhere smaller like Nerja, and get the bus into Malage for the day, but either option might work for you. Nerja has the amazing caves nearby, buses to market at Frijiliana, plenty of things for hubby to explore on his own, and sometimes with you.

Perhaps Turkey? Personally I love Dalyan- half hour transfer from Dalaman airport.
Lazy Turkish village, beach (by boat or dolmus transfer) Lake, markets, mud & sulphur baths, historic Lycian ruins boat trips in the med with snorkelling. If you want more exploration take a trip to Ephesus or Pamakule (overnight)

Why not have a look at Northern Cyprus, it is or was pretty much unspoilt by tourism. There are great beaches and lots of history to see, plus good food.
Car hire was reasonable when we went there, but that was a few years ago.

How about a cruise? You get the pool, he gets to explore the different places you stop at?

Loads of normal resorts would fulfil this spec. Just hire a car and get away from the Burger and Chips joints and you'll be fine.

Perhaps a good place to start would be Croatia though? Lovely beaches and lovely old towns and cities.
