Capitol 1 PPI

Hello, I new to this forum so be gentle.
I had a Capitol 1 Credit Card 1998 to 2003 / 5, when all the subject of PPI being sold without you knowing etc. Then the courts said yes we could reclaim, I decided that I would approach Capitol 1 and requested a refund of PPI as I was self employed at that time of getting the credit card and I did not ask for the insurance.
I filled in the form they sent stating that it was put on my account without me knowing and also that previous I in 2001 I had ask for the PPI to stop and was told that it could not be stopped.
Capitol 1 finally replied after 3 months and requested all my self employed accounts that were submitted to the inland revenue and gave a dead line of 1 month or they would class my case as closed.
I think they have missed the point that whether or not I was self employed they had sold me PPI without my knowledge, I know that the HMRC will take in the region of 3 months to answer any letters I write requesting account information.
So I am at a bit of a loss as what to do next, surely Capitol 1 can't just say they aren't dealing with it anymore?
Any help would be appreciate.

Are you not registered for HMRC online services?
If you were then all you would have to do is print off your tax returns that are needed.
If you are not already registered for online services then do it now , it actually dosnt take long to get all signed up and it would be way quicker than waiting for replies from them in the post. The loopy one has gone :j0 -

It is a complete myth from the claims management companies that PPI was added without your knowledge -
Firstly credit card PPI would appear as a separate item on every single credit card statement that carried a balance (rather than paid off in full) so you could see every month you were paying it - there is no credibility to the argument you didn't know about it unless you are also saying you never checked a single statement.
Secondly it could not be added without your knowledge - a new charge on your card that you didn't recognise would be flagged up by you to the bank once you had your statement.
Thirdly, simply being self employed is not a reason for PPI miss-sale (another claims company myth) - unless the conditions made it extremely difficult to claim if you were out of work
CC PPI would either have been added when you signed for the card or added after following a telephone call (probably to activate the card). You may have forgotten this as it was 17 years ago.
As you are making a complaint about the miss-sale, Cap One are allowed to ask for proof of your allegations. Provide this to them and explain the delay - and refer them to the ombudsman if they refuse to extent the deadline (after you have written to cap one explaining the time frame needed for your copies from the tax man)Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

They havent missed the point. Either they dont believe you were self employed (maybe your application said employed?) and what proof you were. Or that they do cover the self employed (which most PPI does) and they want to verify your income for eligibility purposes.
They cannot enforce unfair deadlines on you. You have 6 months.
Your complaint about not knowing is weak and unprovable. You rarely see that complaint reason result in success (some people may have used that reason but it is usually another reason that results in the success - not an unprovable allegation that lacks credibility).I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0 -

This is the correct answer. Just to add, as the PPI shows on every monthly statement, it is usually considered more likely that someone making this claim has simply forgotten that they purchased the policy. Especially in cases such as this where the policy ran for a long time and a long time has elapsed since it was closed.
To the OP - once you get your documents from HMRC, you can send them in and they should deal with the matter. If not then you can go to the Financial Ombudsman, but realistically if it is established that there are grounds for complaint then most companies would deal with it at their own end rather than pay a FOS fee on top. You would be best to phone them and tell them there might be a delay. Could your accountant not provide a copy of your accounts?0
