Sorn question.

I've got road tax for my car, but I now wanted to SORN it.
When I try to SORN it now, it appears to be backdating the date of the SORN to the 1st March, which I don't want to do, as it was being driven after that date.
The website says I will get a refund for whole months I haven't used, and I'm taxed until 31st July. But I don't want to sorn it on the 1st April as I gather this means I will not get money back for the month of April, so in effect, May, June and July only instead of April also. Am I right in thinking this?
So how do I get the SORN for the end of this month? As there is nowhere on he website that lets me change this SORN start date of the 1st March to the end of March instead.
Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Yep, Its normal i did the same a few months back.
SORN'd the vehicle near the end of the month and the SORN applied from the 1st. But the refund it from the 1st of the next month.
If you wait until the 1st of next month it will SORN from then, But you will lose another months worth of tax when they refund.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
My concern is that if I sorn it now and the Sorn is from the 1st March, not the end, then technically I could end up with a fine for driving on roads whilst sorned. That is one of my concerns.
The other is if I wait until the 1st April and Sorn then, I will lose a month.
Is there any way to SORN at the end of the month without either of the above situations happening?
Also how do you calculate your refund? If you have paid 12 months, is it literally 12 months / 12 then multiplying by the number of whole months unused?
Thanks in advance.0 -
No, you won't get fined for having driven it since the 1st of March. Don't worry about the start date at all. If you'd just realised your insurance had run out last week, then the backdating of the SORN to 1st March would cover you for any possible continuous insurance breach.
The refund is pro-rata for complete months remaining, less any admin fees for it being 6mo tax or paid by DD. So for a band G car - £180/12mo - you'd get £15 per complete month remaining. April being the first possible month, if you SORN it before the end of March. April, May, June, July = 4mo = £60.
The DVLA's VED systems seem to be based entirely on complete months, rather than individual days. So if you SORN something any time in March, you are covered for SORN for the whole of March. But, obviously, a refund of VED from the start of March wouldn't make sense - so the VED refund goes from the start of April. It's only in the last few months, since the massive increase in refunds of partial tax because of keeper changes, that it's become an issue - and since VED is going to have to be rehashed at some point in the near future, because revenue must be plunging like a stone as CO2 emissions of newer cars drop, there's no point in developing complete new VED systems just yet. There may well be design discussions going on, but it'll all depend on the political decisions for how VED will be reworked.0 -

My insurance is still valid and is running until the end of the policy.
I don't want it to be covered for SORN for the whole of March as the car was being driven the 1st and 2nd week of March. Hence why I am thinking a fine may apply as there are photos to show the car being driven at the start of March. So if I sorn it now and it back dates to the start of March that is wrong, as I want to sorn it so that the sorn shows from the end of March.
Is there any way to do this? Or have I misunderstood something?

You're overthinking it. Your car was taxed on the dates you drove it. End of.0 -
So am I right in thinking that even if the computers say Sorn from the 1st March, then if I sorn it say today 28th March, then it will only be sorned from that date?
Is that right?0 -

Yes, the transaction will have been recorded at 28th but as tax is a monthly charge it will show as from the 1st of the month, just like when you buy tax
Don't worry about getting fined as if you were scanned by ANPR you would have shown as being taxed at the time0 -
it will be sorned from the day you fill in/sign the form , the tax question , is easy , you will only get refunds for full months AFTER the sorn is applied for ,0
