Iceland

The husband is busy planning a trip in September.

Suggestions appreciated.

Hotel or B&B?

I kind of want a local type stay, he's into hotels? Any suggestions for independent hotels?

Where about in Iceland do you want to go, and what is your definition of 'local type stay' - do you mean a small B&B? A lot of the hotels outside Reykjavik are small family run affairs anyway.

You will also find the holiday is much cheaper if you can go in early October, as that is when prices drop. For flights, Icelandair has an offer on at the moment - £143 return if you can be flexible on the day you fly out/back. That was cheaper than the Easyjet price when I booke my flights last week.

How long are you staying? What do you want to do/see?

If you just want to do the "touristy" things like visit the Blue Lagoon, Geysir and Gullfoss then just find somewhere to stay in Reykajavic, but I would highly recommend that you venture further afield as the country is stunning.

Outside of Reykjavik / Keflavic the country is very sparsely populated. For me that was part of the appeal of going there because the scenery and landscapes are unspoilt and utterly beautiful.

I would highly recommend hiring a car. Driving is easy in Iceland as outside of Reykjavik there is practically no traffic, but it is a big country, so bear the travelling distances in mind when planning your itinerary.

Iceland Air own some hotels and there used to be some very good value packages which included flights, hotels and car rental. I don't know if they are still good value or not.

Consider the youth hostels, they can be a cheap way to see out of the country and a lot are placed very well for the sights See http://www.hostel.is/

Many have private rooms so its not all kids and dorms..

    Absolutely beautiful country...

If you have four or five days head down the south coast to Vik and back perhaps as far as the glacial lagoon. Most hotels/b+b are small affairs anyway.

Few things we learnt from our trip.

Speed limit is 90kph (56mph) so you dont get anywhere quick !
There are plenty of speed cameras and police in the remotest of places !
Car hire and hotels aren't cheap. Fuel is similar to UK.
CDW to zero is not offered generally so take out additional cover in UK.
Check daylight hours, you may find yourself chasing the daylight.
Food is expensive especially in hotels and b+b's, consider booking places that have a communal kitchen, many do.

Despite all the above GO its a beautiful country you won't regret it, i'd go back in a heartbeat.

I would recommend driving around the ring road. Certainly do-able in a week.

We went in Feb Sun to Thurs with Easyjet from Manchester which was a great flight but i think there are some other airlines too which do good deals.
We stayed at CenterHotel Klopp which i can definitely recommend although the rooms are small so id recommend booking a twin rather than a double as you get a little bit more space.
We also hired a car and did a bit of exploring. Id highly recommend this as its cheap enough to hire the car and very easy to get around

Looking for holiday ideas for 2016. Currently, Isle of Skye in March, Riga in May, Crete in June and Lake District in October. August cruise cancelled, but Baby due September 2016! :j

You will have a wonderful time - it's a beautiful country.
Meals are expensive so I would definately book a hotel with at least breakfast included
