G24 Parking Ticket

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I received a parking charge notice from G24 for parking 45 minutes over the 2 hour limit. I didn't know about the limit although I'm not denying there are probably signs around. The fine is for £70 (£42 for early payment).
Even if I am in the wrong this is huge amount. I am tempted to ignore the letter but also scared about repercussions.
The more I try to read the advice people are giving the more confused I am getting.
Is there a simple answer to this?

Please, please, if anyone can help, I really do need it.

Read them.
Put G24 in the Search this Forum box - all you need to know is there.
