They can print the VAT receipt on the normal receipt, so really they're just saving about 2 lines of text.

But if you pay by card then they must give you the card receipt as part of their card processing agreement. The terminal will print it automatically and they can't stop it, and they can't normally add VAT details to it because most terminals are locked up tight for security reasons.

So they usually give you that receipt and only print the other one if you ask for it, which the vast majority of people don't because they don't want it littering their car.

If they chose a decent card processing system it wouldn't be a problem

Thanks for the replies, it's just that sometimes I forget to ask for a vat receipt, One extra line on all receipts would me.

As my employer expects us to use our own cars for business, I'll keep claiming to cover the bills.
