Quote for Extractor Fan Query

Hi guys,

I've had a quote to fix an extractor fan in my bathroom and I was wondering if someone with more knowledge of this work would kindly be able to tell me if the price looks reasonable or not please?

It was quite a bit higher than I expected but without context its hard to know if its reasonable or not and the guy has a lot of previous positive customer reviews. If anyone could let me know that would be much appreciated.

Job: Supply and install 4 inch mixed flow, in-line duct fan (255m3/h) (Vortice Lineo) to first floor bathroom (to be vented to front through either the soffit with a fixed grille or loft side wall with gravity shutter). £397 inc all parts and labour. To take about 4-5 hours.

Thanks all!

Seems very expensive to me. Especially if venting to the soffit which is far easier than cutting a hole through the wall.

I've just bought an inline fan for our bathroom and I'm doing most of it myself. I had a builder in the other day doing other work and he charged me £30 to cut a hole in the soffit, attach the ducting to a louvre vent and fit it outside for me. He also drilled the hole in the bathroom ceiling using his hole saw for the internal vent for me.

I will connect the ducting to the fan, mounting it in the loft and screwing in the internal vent. Then I've got an electrician in next week for a day on a day rate and he will wire it up for me to the light switch. I've previously had a quote for just wiring up the fan of £150.

Parts: you can get a very good Manrose inline fan for about £65 but our bathroom is smaller so I went with an Aventa fan from Amazon for £36 with a white internal vent for £6. Brown louvre vent and 3m ducting with some cable ties from Screwfix £8. Total parts £50.

It depends on the model of fan but I wouldn't pay more than £250 for what is probably a couple of hours work at most. Maybe more of going through the wall. Check the price of the fan and see if you really need a massively powerful one. I think the one I got was about 180m3/h.

That sounds ridiculous. The very first hit on google for a Vortice Lineo with 255m3/h extraction was £81 without shopping around, so £100 with bits and pieces.

So, £300 for 4-5 hours work. Nice work if you can get it.

Thanks for your replies. I queried the parts cost and the breakdown was £80 for the fan and £40 for the other materials. I think we probably do need the powerful one as our bathroom barely gets any sun due to positioning and we have quite a bit of moisture to get rid of.

    you say fix?

is there a fan already in place and you are just replacing?

or is this a new fan?

big difference in work and cost.

Sorry, I should have clarified. It's a brand new fixing entirely, nothing currently there. Thanks

Really depends what there doing, where the fans going, how long pipe work is yes you’ve put it in but is it lagged? Will fan give sufficient flow for distance, does it need condensate pipe, are they installing separate fan isolator, amount of cabling , are they putting in access panel in bathroom ceiling, is this just a replacement of fan same positioning just ducting being re – routed or complete new install, chasing out walls for switching etc will it be accessible from above inline fans there are some complete crap out there you’ll be lucky last 12mths and 4” 100mm is the minimum,

Remember also you need air to come into bathroom when fans working as fans don't work in a vaccum seen so many fitted where they put bigger and bigger ones in to try and stop bathroom steaming up but when you close bathroom door the room is virtually air tight so no matter how big they'll not work

I’d always recommend XPELAIR or VENT AXIA but there not cheap fans fitted properly with all the trimmings tend to cost a more,,,,, replace existing like for like 50 -100 labour + cost of fan new install 250 + cost of fan really depends on what they are doing ?
