Connection Problems

I have windows xp which I purchased last october but I have had problems ever since with it. I am on aol and everytime I speak to them they just tell me stuff which I have already tried and know it is not going to work. Basically it takes about 30 mins to get onto the internet from time of turning pc on and whenever the house phone is answered I lose connection. I have only got the house and computer on the main phone connection. I do have broadband. I have tried everything I can possibly think of but still the same problems. I have phoned pc world where I purchased it from and they say that it is fine. To top it all off yesterday I could not even use the house phone as I had no dialling tone and this also stopped me logging on. I phoned BT up and they checked the line and said it was fine. An automated voice I spoke to which is rubbish. I phoned off my mobile which is going to cost me a fortune. Can someone please help me. I have defragmented every disc. I have run recovery programs. I have used system mechanic 6 to clear away any old clutter but I am now asking the best site on the internet for an answer. Why didn`t I do this before I just don`t know.

Had a similar problem 9 months ago.
Worth checking with BT - they swore blind that it was all down to my internal phone connection and were telling me that it would cost £75 for an engineer to come out and check. Called their bluff and told them to send an engineer anyway, within 30 mins he said that there was a problem on the external line and that he couldn`t believe they hadn`t picked it up previously!!
Haven`t had any problems since.
Hope it all gets sorted.

It doesn't sound like a PC problem. Have you tried just connecting the modem/router to the master socket with no phones or extensions connected? If you do not get dial tone when connecting a phone to the master socket with nothing else connected, report this as a fault to BT. Try another handset. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Thnaks maybe I will try that to see what happens. I have since discovered that BT have an online complaint process which lets you track any faults so I will also try that.HappyJanner wrote: »Had a similar problem 9 months ago.

This is one that I have not tried so will try that this afternoon when I get home as I am using my work`s computer at present which is why I am so long replying. The handset is only 2 months old and the reason I got rid of the other handset was because I thought it was faulty but it works fine in my mate`s house. The more I am thinking about it , the more sense it makes that it is definitely a phone line problem. Thanks once again for your reply.0 -
After emailing BT yesterday morning from work a couple of times and telling them that I intend to apply for compensation, as I have had to use my mobile to make calls due to house phone not working, I had a phone call from BT at 1pm saying that an engineer would be out today between 8am and 1pm and in the meantime they would transfer my calls to my mobile. Imagine my surprise when I got home at 2pm and found the house phone working. They have done something their end but it looks like they don`t know what they are doing either. I will keep everyone posted about the outcome of the engineers visit which I stated on email I would not be paying any £75 call out fee. I wrote saying that as a valued customer who has never missed a payment I expect my phone to be working correctly and maintained free of charge.0

Two BT engineers arrived at my house at 8am and left 2 hours later after changing the outside phone line as it was in urgent need of replacement. The phone is working brilliantly now and there is no interference on the line whatsoever. The problem I have now is that I have done something to my computer and I cannot get a dialling tone. I think this is my fault as I was messing about the other day and I have obviously done something to it but I just don`t know what. I also have a problem with a norton firewall but not sure what. Can anyone help me please?
Look in the bright side at least I have now go a phone that is working.
At last I have finally got my pc back on. I changed the filter to the main phone line and it seems to be working okay but unfortunately it is still disconnecting when the house phone is answered which I can`t understand why. Am nearly there though , always think positive and it will get you through.0 -
