Planning Permission - Caravan

Hello123_2

I am going round in circles with our local Council so hope someone can help!
Do we need Planning Permission to have a Caravan in our back garden? There are no Covenants on the land restricting this and we do not have many neighbours so not overlooked.
We do NOT plan to live in it at first (just for storage).
Eventually we do plan live in it temporarily when we have works done to the house.
Does it make a difference if we purchase a touring caravan as opposed to a static, if so what?
Hope someone can help as everyone I speak to at the Council has different opinions and have still not replied to my emails.

No doubt the reason you haven't received a reply is because there are several different factors in play.
Read this and then perhaps write another email explaining the two parts to your question - storage/living in. Plus, let them know what kind of caravan it is going to be (makes a difference as you will see from the article)

Thanks.
Correct me if I'm wrong but from what I gather from your article:
A caravan includes a 'static'' caravan so it makes no difference what type of caravan we have?
We do NOT need permission if we do not live in it?
Will WILL need PP when we do live in it?0 -
That is my understanding, but there may be local bye laws which you should consider. You might like to consider your neighbours, are they likely to make an objection to the council?"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

A bit more information here:

My understanding is that it has to be 'movable' in some way. So it can be 'static' as long as it can be moved!
My understanding is that as long as it is not your main residence then you will not need planning permission. So, for example, if you eat your meals in the main house and then just use the caraven for sleeping then it is not your main residence and does not need planning permission.
To be honest, you will just have to wait until the council make a decision. Can you telephone and speak to someone explaining what is going to happen?
Hopefully you are now 'armed' with a little more knowledge.0 -

Thanks for the help.
I have called them several times and sent 3 emails, they said it takes 10 working days to reply.
We only have 1 neighbour who said she is fine with it.
Thanks again0 -
Quite a lot of peole have a caravan as "overspill" accomodation for older children, granny etc.
If the person using it is going to the loo, having a bath, cooking or something in the hosue and it is "ancilliary" accomodation, then it is OK.
If you are actually demolishing the house and cannot use any of the facilities it is more difficult. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

I'm not sure it is.
My BiL lives in a conservation area, and he was allowed a caravan in the garden until the barn he was converting was signed off. Believe me, if his neighbour could have prevented him doing that, he would have!
The caravan is now in my back garden, but as I live in the nether regions of nowhere in particular and it's not overlooked, I didn't ask anyone about siting it there.0
