Hiring a car from a friend
A friend (here in Italy) has very kindly offered to lend me his car for three weeks while he's away. I will be covered by his insurance. I have an annual car excess insurance (taken out in the UK). I was wondering if he rented me his car for a nominal amount (say 1 euro a day) then if I was unfortunate enough to have an accident, I could claim any excess on his insurance against my excess insurance.
Odd request I know, but I wondered if anyone had any thoughts/experiences or insights that might be useful?

It wouldn't work in the UK, as policies here normally expressly exclude use of the car for hire.
It may be different in Italy, but I doubt it.0 -
Ah - that was an angle I admit that I hadn't thought of - that's to say the restrictions on the existing policy of the car. Good point, thanks!0

Mine only applies if the vehicle is hired from a Rental Company, which is defined as
Rental Company
A company or agency which is fully licensed with the regulatory authority of the country, state or local authority where the Rental Vehicle is collected0 -
Good point. It seems like a bit of a non starter as an idea - but it was at least worth thinking about. Thanks for the info.
