Does your employer tell you when to take your annual leave?

    We can''t have two people off in the department (out of 4) unless we plan way ahead and it can't be avoided (odd day is ok).

    We like to shut down over Christmas and New Year but can come in if we need to save holiday!

    We get 5 weeks a year which one week can be carried over if not used but has to be used in the first couple of months of the new year.

    Other parts of the business (Factory/Warehouse ) are different though and are a little more rigid with a couple of the weeks holiday.

    One section of our business has all their holidays for the year prescribed for them giving them no floating days at all to use when they want.

Entitledto.com shows that after tax credits have done with us (as we have 2 children the 9 year old with behaviour problems) he is working for £2.54 an hour.


    Some days I forget I have him!! But he loves his job!! Well more than his family

    Tell him not to take up truck driving :)- we can rarely tell anyone what they are doing until the afternoon before, unless there is a complicated move ahead. Some of my lads have come in the morning thinking they were doing nothing much and next minute they are heading off abroad.

    I saw an advert for hotel staff where they said all annual leave must be taken during January when they shut down for a month.

    Where I work, we can take time off pretty much when we want. We do have a Christmas close down so we have to take 3 days off then, but can be flexi time or annual leave. Other than that, it's basically service needs first so we can't all be off at the same time, which isn't usually a problem. My longest holiday was in 2012/13 where I had 9 weeks off with a combination of annual leave, time off in lieu, bank holidays and flexi time. Best holiday of my life. Should be covered in your terms & conditions of employment. Working time regulations specify a minimum 11 hour break in each 24 hour period, but there are many exemptions.
  • Used to when I worked in hotels - if we didn't take x amount of leave by set time of year/quarter then my HOD could have been disciplined from what I remember : (

    OP, the hour a day commuting is not classed as working time.

    We have 'forbidden weeks' which no-one is allowed off, this is usually most of June, July, the whole of December and occasional weeks usually around school holidays. No more than 2 weeks off allowed (although eyebrows are often raised if you try to book more than a week) and no two people in the same department are allowed time off at the same time.

    One employer I worked for, I started 2 months to go on the current annual leave year. As my annual entitlement was 24 days (of which 3 were for those days between Xmas and NY) I should've four days holiday. Couldn't add them onto the next year's entitlement and the dept was fully booked. Was paid those four days by cheque as it was unofficial.

    Another employee you could carry a week over but only could use it in April. Staff were at skeleton levels in April. More so if Easter fell in April too.
