:)Hi there. If anyone has experience or advice regarding our situation we would be really grateful. Apologies in advance for long convoluted story, just want to explain the whole situation.
Ok, my husband has a long term mental illness and receives contribution based ESA and lower rates DLA for care and mobility. I cared for my ill mum up until around 14 months ago during which time we were made to leave our housing assn property of 18 years as I was giving mum 24 hour care we all moved in with mum and when she died we had to sell her home quickly as she'd taken out an equity loan to make adaptations to her home. Thus we were homeless. We (my husband, me and our grown up son) moved into a rented flat and I've been using the money my mum left me to pay half the rent (my son pays the other half)
We are due to get some help towards buying a shared ownership mortgage in April and I have 30k left to put down as deposit.
We have been unable to get a mortgage for the remainder we will need as our income is fairly low (I earn around £75 a week) and are not entitled to the HOLD scheme as hoped as my husband isn't on middle rate DLA ( although I've just reapplied for it)
Can anyone advise on other ways to use the 30k if we don't get a mortgage. I hate seeing my mums money being frittered each month on renting. We just want to settle as I'm still not well after caring for mum so long and my husband's illness has worsened significantly with all that's happened.
I feel like I no longer know which way to turn as every plan seems to be scuppered. We are no longer entitled to be on the housing list by the way since the recent changes.
Any advice would be great, thank you x

I was under the impression anyone can join the housing list, it's just that some have almost zero chance of being allocated a property.
Who told you you couldn't and what recent changes do you refer to?
Also I don't u understand why you were made to give up previous ha property?0 -

I'm afraid this is no longer true.
All councils have their own criteria as to who can go on the housing register.
e.g.

I am not sure how to help the OP.
They seem to be asking how they can spend the money they have saved for a deposit wisely? Whilst the OP is renting and there is insufficient income to pay the rent then this money will have to be used.
So, perhaps rather than ask what the money should be spent on the real problem needs to be addressed as to how they can become eligible for a mortgage. This would mean the OP taking on full employment and then after a while becoming, hopefully, eligible for a mortgage.
Have I missed something?0 -
Hi there. Thank you both for trying to help. Yes, sorry my post on reading back is vague, I guess I just want general advice or suggestions.
Regarding the housing assn property, we were made to leave as I couldn't honestly say I was there three nights a week as I was caring full time for my mum who was dying at the time. I explained and even pleaded with them to let us keep the property but they wouldn't let us.
We aren't eligible at any of our local housing associations as we don't have family here, despite the fact that all the support for us with my husband's Illness is here.
It isn't possible for me to work full time as I am still unwell after caring for Mum, plus my husband needs a lot of support (not entitled to carers allowance as he is on lower rate DLA)
As the nice guy at the council said, "you just fall through all the cracks"0 -
Recent changes are moving to an area 15 miles away to be near the support group mentioned in last post.0
