EDF switch tariff - silly quotes

EDF tell me I can save money by switching to a different tariff with them and indeed this is true; I can save £94 a year. However when I go to switch, it tells me my new monthly DD payment will be 250% higher than my current payment! I am in credit already on my account and expected annual usage is the same.

I rang EDF to query this and they don't know the answer except that there is a 'glitch' in their quote system at the moment (they are right there!). Also I could not switch by phone as 'their systems are down'. Great.

Anyone else had these problems?

Switch online via 'MyAccount', this will set you DD to the amount shown but whilst in 'MyAccount' you can also ask to change your DD amount.

This takes a few days to process but you can get your DD set to what you think is a reasonable amount.

It was in 'MyAccount' that it was telling me my new monthly payment would skyrocket if I switched to save money. I wouldn't want to switch until this is sorted out as I wouldn't rely on being able to reset my DD amount online by such a huge figure.
  • When you say you are in credit, is the account right up to date the day you are trying to switch tariffs with actual meter meter readings?

I was in credit after the last bill (January) and am not due to supply meter readings again until May. Since the last bill, more DD's have been paid so I am even more in credit. I can see no sensible reason for my estimated DD to be 250% more if I change tariff to a cheaper one!

I think the EDF website in general and 'My account' in particular is having problems at the moment and has been for the last few days. I can neither submit meter readings or switch my tariff.
Apparently they are 'working on the problem'.

How do you know you are 'even more in credit' if you have not supplied any up to date meter readings? Almost 3 months has passed since your last bill and you will have no way of knowing that that credit has not been used up or that your Direct Debit payments have more than covered your usage since then without submitting new readings.

I had a similar problem this week and used Live Chat to highlight the issue. The agent looked at the account and asked me to go through the tariff change process whist remaining on Live Chat and when the confirmation page came up changed the DD back to what it was before. There was a hiccup the next day when the higher amount was applied, presumably the tariff change was actually applied overnight, but another chat session sorted that out.
If money saving starts to involve irritation or frustration the fine line between thrift and greed should be examined.

When we were supplied by EDF, they kept trying to change our monthly direct debits all over the place, with no apparent rhyme nor reason. A quick call after each attempt, and they quickly agreed to not change them.

Sounds like you can do this online now, which is possibly even better. :)

Use a comparison site - I feel sure you can do better than any EDF tariff (but may require you to go to separate suppliers)

I switched tariff today as the quoted monthly payment was about 80% higher and not 250% higher like it was yesterday! Online chat say they will adjust it down after the new tariff is switched which takes 24 hours. We'll see! If they fail to adjust it then I can live with an 80% overpayment for one month but not a 250% overpayment.

Thanks for the input and online chat suggestion.
