Apple does a special Higher Education discount when you buy direct. The discount is about 15% (depends on what you buy) making the cheapest macbook £601.

Students also get a 3 year warranty as standard when you buy online, or if buying over the phone you get offered 3 years for about £58.
They say you can't put a value on life... but I live it at half price!

Try poping in to the staples store coz when i had a look they did a good laptop with a printer, the printer ink, paper, a USB, laptop case and i think a mouse too. Cant remember what price tho but it a good deal! (Just a warning staples doesnt have the best staff on hand from experience)

For my new laptop i had it custom made by dell with amasing graphics specs (being a graphics student from september!) for about £411 includin VAT & Delivery.

The problem with buying a laptop for university before term starts is that you don't yet have your NUS card - in addition, the NUS card (or extra card) doesn't necessarily mean you're going to be getting the best student deals on laptops, netbooks or MacBooks (as a few posters have mentioned).

As a result of people asking me (a lot) about what student laptop to buy, I started my own squidoo discussion/directory lens... www .squidoo.com/student-laptop-deals-for-university-uk (copy into your browser and remove the space after www)

Hopefully the site can help people find a great deal on a laptop - regardless of student discount.

With regards budget, (this day and age) I wouldn't recommend spending more than £400 for a typical student laptop. Refurbished laptops can give you a bit more value for money, I've talked a bit about these on my site.

I know the thread is a bit old but I've got mates still referring to it so thought this may help some people save money.

Agree that the NUS EXTRA card is the way to go... if you get it from PC World, Comet, Staples, Rymans, Apple or wherever then you can also get your consumables, printer cartridges, and anything else.... the savings all add up!

Just a word of cuation - check what spec you need particulary if you are doing design, graphics etc. We contacted the Uni direct to find out if there was anything specific my DD laptop needed (she is doing architecture) and also chek whether Mac or Windows. You will be surpirsed how many design type courses DONT use Mac's
