Would I be Accepted for a Barclaycard if I had problems with them in the Past ?

In about 2003 I lost my job and struggled to pay my debts, I paid what I could but Egg (Later to be Barclaycard) sold my debt on to a collection agency and defaulted me.

I have now paid all my debts and my defaults have gone, I actually now bank with barclays and have a full current account with them with a proper ofline debt card, cheque book etc. I have never been overdrawn and never had any charges.

But I would like another Barclaycard, just to use and pay off each month by Direct Debit, I don't want to repeat the problems of the past. The last letter from Barclaycard said that this was to confirm the closure of your account and the assignment of your debt to Capquest. It then confirms that my account was transferred to Capquest and the Debt is payable to them.

I take that to mean they sold it and now have nothing to do with it, The debt was settled with Capquest a few years ago.

The barclaycard Checker thing gives me a 70 -80% chance of a Platinum card.

The question is would it be worth applying or are they likely to decline me due to past problems, although I never held a Barclaycard just egg.

Only one way to find out. Ex was made bankrupt by RBS and after being discharged ultimately went on to not only get credit with them again and even a job with them (before losing the job and then getting into debt issues with them again)

If its only a few years ago then its likely to still be on your CRA file plus any internal records they keep.

But why Barclaycard? Given you arent looking at a sub prime product why not a card from a company you dont have bad history with and offers better things in terms of cashback or rewards?

That's a good point. I thought it would be better with the same bank as I bank with. Not on CRA records now as default was 10 years ago.

banks have a long memory with their internal records. As there are so many CCs to choose from I would go with another one, one with a long 0% on purchases or cash-back.

I had issues with MBNA and Capital One as well as BarclayCard, I have had offers from MBNA and Capital One. With a letter saying they know how hard it is to build credit ect etc... Silly interest rates. But i was suprised they bothered.

    Nothing even from Barclaycard though.

They obviously have not done a credit check on me because they will have noticed that i have a decent credit file since my problems with them.

Try them. A friend of mine years ago got into trouble and they even took out a county court order against him. He paid the debt off over 2 years and in 1996 applied for a BC and they issued him with one and a good credit limit.

My brother had a Barclaycard around 10 years ago which was defaulted. After 6 years everything was cleared. He has applied for Barclaycard and it was declined immediately.

The letter he received says "You had a card in the paste which was not conducted satisfactorily example it had an unpaid balance"

So based on this they checked internal records at the time of online application.

As someone who had problems with Barclays in the past and now has a Barclaycard again I would say yes, you could be accepted for a Barclaycard.

I have seen many people post that they have been accepted again after past problems.

Just make sure you set up a direct debit for the minimum payment each month and don't borrow more than you can afford to pay.

    Good luck.

i would have thought there is a good chance,
but to use for spending and clear in full each month, i wonder if Barclaycard are the best option.
i would go for Amex Cashback every time. great service. hard currency for spending, rather than points. and the best rates:T
