Thanks everyone, I used the program 'EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard 8.6' free edition as have managed to extract/save/copy the important files to my laptop, and the majority are saved as either DOCX or XLS files (word and excel I'm guessing), and the files sizes are all what they should be (as they were before the crash) I just cant open any of them? Any ideas please?

Forgot to say, they automatically restored/saved into a folder called FAT32, then the folders within that folder were named as normal before the crash

yup , you will have to rename the extensions correctly to view them

not on a windows box at the moment , go to file explorer , VIEW , show file name extension , then right click and rename the extension to its correct on

IE. fred.docx rename to fred.jpg , if that was its original type

    Name, date modified, type, size

Apologies, I'm not great on a PC

found it, and renamed an excel file as 'britishboy.xls' as it would normally appear, opened it with excel and it showed an error message:

Excel found unreadable content in 'britishboy.xls'. Do you want to recover the contents of this workbook? If you trust the content of the workbook, click 'yes'.

I click 'yes', then nothing. Excel stays a blank sheet and still titled 'book 1' as if you'd just opened excel

sorry , at least you can rename them now , I suggest taking a copy of them before you open them , as excel might damage them , however in previous attempts at recovering files I have found the recovered files to be corrupt ,

do a backup of the files before continuing
  • [FONT=&quot]Your memory disk is asking to format is because its file system is turned to RAW. Formatting of your hard drive is only a way to convert its file system from RAW to FAT32 or NTFS and probably fix the not formatted error, but before you formatted it, get the important files from the HARD drive by a third-party tool such as Free Any Data Recovery.
